As a town we have a lot to be proud of but how do we, as a community, want things to develop in the future?
At it's conference in November 2005 the Bournemouth Partnership, which represents over 200 organisations in the public, business, voluntary and community sectors, started to create a Vision of the Bournemouth we would like to see in 2026...
What is it all about?
Lots of formal and less formal discussions and chats have taken place with individuals and groups and all this input has gone to create a vision for Bournemouth. The Community Strategy known as Bournemouth Vision 2026 sets out the big picture for Bournemouth 2026 and things we can practically aim for over 4 years (2007-2011) towards achieving that vision. The key themes identified in the vision are set out on the right, click on them to find out more.
It is a first step, but we feel it is a vital step in the process of further working together. Already great partnership work is going on, led by the Council, Police, NHS Bournemouth and Poole, the Fire and Rescue Service and many others groups - Bournemouth has been complimented by the Government office for our achievements to date. Targets and aspirations are also being shared with Poole and Dorset partnerships where it makes sense to do so. We already have a great base on which to build further.
Within the strategy are some key targets negotiated with Central Government which could result in up to £4.6million in performance reward grants if they are achieved. Already Bournemouth 2026 has been working on the allocation of nearly £1million of Government funding to help the Partnership kick start new initiatives in these areas. It is clear that the way that public services are funded is changing. Increasingly, Central Government money is directed towards communities who can demonstrate what they want, where they are
going and really can work together to make it happen. This makes a lot of sense and has political support across the board.
However, the key is "making things happen" and this strategy is just the start. Action plans will be drawn up alongside this 4 year strategy with a view to involving further joint efforts towards turning dreams into reality. It is an exciting prospect!
We really hope that community groups will look at their own objectives alongside this strategy and recognise that by working together with others, it really is a win-win situation! If you are not in Bournemouth 2026 at the moment but want to get involved then contact Debbie Clifton on (01202) 456848 who will be delighted to show you the way.
Finally we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have put so much into making this happen:
Adrian Thomas - Chair of Bournemouth 2026
Stephen MacLoughlin - Former Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council
Pam Donnellan - Chief Executive of Bournemouth Borough Council
