Bournemouth will once again be collecting Christmas trees as part of its commitment to recycle as much of its green waste as possible.
During the two weeks starting Monday 10 January, residents should put their tree out for collection on the day of their normal refuse collection (little bin) that is also the opposite week to their recycling bin (big bin) collection.
If you miss your collection day your tree can be taken to Millhams Household Recycling Centre for disposal or to the Kings Park collection point which will be running on January 8, 15 and 22 from 9am till 1pm.
Last year the amount of Christmas trees recycled contributed to the Council collecting a record amount of green waste – more than 500 tonnes more than the previous year – all of which was recycled rather than ending up in landfill. In total 3,980 tonnes of green waste was collected compared to 3,497 tonnes in 2010.
Councillor Michael Filer, portfolio holder for Transport and Technical Services, said: “The success of our green waste scheme is one of the reasons why Bournemouth is fourth best Council in the UK for recycling. I am delighted that so many people are keen to do their bit and recycle as much of their garden waste and Christmas trees as possible. Together we can recycle more and waste less!”
Currently 26,500 are on the green waste collection scheme. The 1700 people who are on the waiting list will be informed in writing later this month whether the scheme is being extended to include them. In previous years the Council has managed to absorb everyone on the annual list for the next year’s scheme.
