Green Goals Scoops Green Apple

The Green Goals project which delivers sustainable community benefits in Bournemouth has scooped a prestigious environmental award known as a Green Apple.

The Award will be presented to the Green Goals Partnership at the House of Commons later this year. Top winners will then have the chance to represent their country in the European Business Awards for the Environment, being held in Brussels. In total there were more than 500 nominations for this year’s awards.

Green Goals was set up in August 2009 as a unique partnership linking football, education, business and the Council. The project aims to make Bournemouth a cleaner, safer, greener place to live, work and visit.

Councillor Michael Filer, Portfolio holder for Environment & Transport, said: “This is marvellous news that Green Goals has been recognised in this way nationally and shows Bournemouth is leading the way in delivering a more environmentally sustainable community for everyone. I am delighted the Green Apple Environmental Awards has seen just how much difference this project is making.”

Rob Mitchell, Commercial Director, AFC Bournemouth, said; “We are delighted that Green Goals has been identified as having a valuable environmental contribution to make. It is a credit to all the partners involved and shows just what working together can do to deliver real achievements.”

Green Goals is to formally launch its Community Fund shortly allowing local groups to bid for grants to help them deliver environmental projects for local people.

In addition the partnership will be holding a number of education and awareness events around the Borough during the 2010/11 football season highlighting how people can do their bit to help.

Green Goals partners are Bournemouth Council Street Services, AFC Bournemouth, Castlepoint Shopping Park, New Milton Sand & Ballast, New Earth Solutions, W&S Recycling, Eco-Sustainable Solutions, South West Regional Assessment Centre and Focal Point Fires.

Achievements to date:
• High profile advertising in the stadium at AFC Bournemouth
