About this Consultation

A key stated Government objective is to increase significantly the number of Gypsy and Traveller sites in appropriate locations, with planning permission. The intention is to address under-provision, particularly in the next few years.

To meet the accommodation needs of the Gypsy and Traveller community throughout the county of Dorset, the local authorities in Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole are working together to produce a joint Gypsy and Traveller, including Travelling Showpeople, Site Allocations Joint Development Plan Document (DPD).

The purpose of this consultation was to obtain the views of the public on the Issues and Options consultation document, which was published to set out the accommodation site requirements for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople and a shortlist of potential sites for further consideration through the DPD process for this purpose.

The consultation was open to anyone who wanted to respond – individuals, organisations and businesses. The consultation exercise was carried out by Bakers Associates.

The consultation was live on the Dorset County Council website, where people were able to make comments directly online. Alternatively people had the option to respond to the consultation by email or post. Hard copies of the documents and response forms were placed in public libraries across the county and additional copies were made available at various council offices.

There were also two half-day public exhibitions in Bournemouth, on the 5th and 13th December, run by consultants to further publicise the consultation on the potential sites.

Further details are available on the Council's website.
