The Grade II* listed Lower Gardens comprise Bournemouth’s most important public park, providing a green corridor linking the town centre with the seafront. The oldest section of the Gardens dates back to the 1840’s, they are of national historic importance and central to the development of Bournemouth as a leading tourist resort.
The Gardens offer a significant range of facilities and attractions including award winning floral displays, a popular mini golf course, art exhibition area, a tethered helium balloon, band stand, aviary, tranquil wooded pathways, a range of catering kiosks, toilets, heritage interpretation, regular events ranging from the spectacular Carabosse Fire Gardens, Air Festival tethered helium balloon glows, large screen presentations of sporting events, films and opera to smaller scale free children’s fun festival, Arts University College Bournemouth summer show and the historic 114 year old candle-lit illuminations.
The Gardens require significant investment to worn infrastructure and restoration of historic features enabling the site to maintain its popularity and success into the future.
This survey was commissioned by Bournemouth Borough Council’s Parks Department to establish patterns of current usage and areas for improvement.
Surveys were carried out on the 23rd, 24th, 26th, 29th and 30th June 2010 at various points within the Lower Gardens and at different times of day.
The results of this survey will be used to inform the development of a Restoration Masterplan for the Lower Gardens. From this, an application to Heritage Lottery to fund restoration works will be made.
