Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) statistics released from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show the results of NHS Bournemouth and Poole working to improve sexual health in the area.
The national statistics carry a stark warning for the nation, with a 3% rise in infections being diagnosed in 2009 from 2008.
Bournemouth and Poole’s rates show a slightly higher rate of infection per 100,000 than the national picture, highlighting the results of a programme of work which encourages testing within the area’s diverse demographic.
NHS Bournemouth and Poole have increased their work around sexual health in recent years, targeting vulnerable groups in order to help prevent the spread of STIs. Part of this work has been to link with local community groups and venues in order to promote the message of prevention and to encourage testing.
As awareness of testing has increased, this allows fast access to treatment for infections such as syphilis, chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhoea and genital warts. “We are working to further improve access to testing in Bournemouth and Poole however, practising safe sex can prevent contracting STIs in the first place; using condoms are an easy way to protect yourself,” said Sophia Callaghan, Consultant in Public Health at NHS Bournemouth and Poole. “I would encourage regular testing every time you change your sexual partner.”
