Townsend Community Garden has been awarded a Green Pennant and local residents have celebrated with a special picnic.
It is the third time that the Community Garden in Townsend has received this national award and is recognition for the hard work of the local community action group; the Townsend Together Team who are responsible for creating and sustaining the garden.
A community picnic was held in the garden on Thursday, 26 August 2010 to mark the occasion, with a buffet laid on by Townsend Community Association.
Councillor Rod Cooper, Cabinet Member for Economy, Leisure and Tourism said: “It’s a great achievement that the garden has received this prestigious award once again and I would like to thank the local volunteers who have helped to create this beautiful space which local residents should be really proud of. In particular, a special thank you goes to local resident, Dave Sheppard for his commitment and time in the garden.”
Local resident, Dave Sheppard said “The garden is a real asset to Townsend. It is a place that residents can come to relax and enjoy. It’s fantastic news that Townsend has received its third Green Pennant for Bournemouth.”
The Townsend Community Garden was once a disused play area known for fly tipping and was transformed around five years ago by the local community, with the help of the Council into an attractive and colourful garden. The garden consists of four raised beds filled with plants, two seating areas and numerous trees with bird boxes.
