The aim of this research was to enable Bournemouth Borough Council to understand user perception of the town centre and beach front areas, particularly with relation to clean, safe and green issues and the growing night-time economy. This will enable Bournemouth Borough Council to tackle the issues affecting the area.
The objectives of this research were to:
• Establish reasons why people visit / use the town centre during the day, evening / night;
• Establish what factors affect perception of the town centre area and what could be done to improve current perceptions;
• Establish reasons why people living in the surrounding areas choose not to visit / use the town centre during the day, evening / night;
• Examine feelings of safety in the area;
• Identify what drives the choice of location for shoppers, revellers and other visitors;
• Identify which factors influence overall perception of the area;
• Identify overall satisfaction with the town centre;
• Establish what, if anything, people think has been done to tackle issues in the town centre / beach front area / awareness of recent improvement / campaigns.
The research consisted of four focus groups conducted in Bournemouth in July 2008. To ensure the views ascertained were representative, users were invited to participate via on-street canvassing in the town centre and beach front area. Each group was between one and one and a half hours in length and was semi-structured by the use of a discussion guide.
